How much weed is in a joint? (grams, sizes and what is sensible)
Most joints contain between 0.3 g and 0.5 g of cannabis flower. Studies of self-reported use put the average joint at roughly 0.32 g, while pre-rolls sold in dispensaries are usually filled to 0.5 g or 1 g because those are convenient packaging sizes, not because that is a sensible single dose.
Typical sizes
- Small / solo joint: 0.2 to 0.3 g
- Standard joint: 0.3 to 0.5 g
- Shared or "party" joint: 0.7 to 1 g
- King-size pre-roll: 1 g and up
From grams to THC
Grams only tell you how much plant material is burning. What matters for the effect is how much THC that plant material contains, and how much of it actually reaches you. Modern flower commonly tests between 15% and 25% THC. A 0.3 g joint at 20% THC holds about 60 mg of THC on paper, but combustion destroys a large share of it and much of the smoke is lost to the air. Realistically only around 20% to 30% is absorbed, which puts a typical solo joint in the range of 10 to 20 mg of absorbed THC.
How much should you put in?
If you are new, rolling less is the single easiest safety measure. A 0.2 g joint smoked slowly, with a pause of 10 to 15 minutes after a few puffs, lets you feel where you are before you go further. Effects from smoking appear within minutes and peak around 30 minutes, so waiting costs you nothing and protects you from an uncomfortable evening.
Practical tips
- Weigh once with a cheap scale, then you will recognise the amount by eye.
- Sharing a joint splits the dose; a 0.5 g joint between two people is roughly 0.25 g each.
- Stronger flower means a smaller joint, not the same joint.
- A joint you do not finish is not wasted; put it out and keep it.
You can put your own numbers, strength and tolerance into the Joint Calculator on the home page and it will suggest a gram amount instead of you guessing.
